Development opportunities are available for male officials throughout Alberta between the ages of 18 and 30. As part of the program, an emphasis is placed on the development and identification of Alberta’s best officials in order to create opportunities for them to represent Alberta at future officiating events.

Alberta Cup Selection Camp

The Alberta Cup selection camp is the first step in the development process. It provides officials the opportunity to officiate elite levels of U15 hockey while being supervised by qualified and experienced officials. Officials are introduced to the expectations and responsibilities of senior officials. The exposure at this camp helps officials advance within the Region and provides the opportunity to attend other development camps. Two officials are selected from this camp to represent each Region at the Alberta Cup.

Alberta Cup

The Alberta Cup is the entry level to Hockey Alberta’s Officiating Development Programs. At the Alberta Cup, officials undergo an even more rigorous development program than the Region Camp and work with officials from throughout Alberta. The Alberta Cup also features the best young player prospects, and this provides an even greater opportunity for the officials working at it. Every game is supervised by the team of supervisors compiled for the tournament. This represents the second step in the provincial development program.

Development Camp

The Provincial Officials Development Camp operates in conjunction with Hockey Alberta’s week-long Male U16 Development Camp in July. Eighteen officials are invited to this week long development camp. Six (6) instructors take the participants through referee procedures, techniques and positioning, off-ice training and fitness testing; quizzes and exams; as well as specialty seminars delivered from guest speakers on topics such as nutrition, weight training, opportunities for officials, and life of a professional official. The process of determining which officials will be selected to attend a development camp is coordinated within each of the six Officials Regions in Alberta.
